The best road trip films to get you in the mood
If you are looking for a little inspiration, look no further. Road trips have been a staple of movies for many years, often as a way of putting characters in confined spaces and seeing how they interact.
So if you are planning on driving long-distance soon, why not watch one of these classic movies before you set off?
We asked our Sona Mandhira Parivaar for their favourite road trip movies - see if you agree with their choices.
1. The Motorcycle Diaries (2004)
Mixing a road movie, with a coming-of-age tale, and featuring one of the most famous revolutionaries of all time, Che Guevara - this beautifully shot film, set in 1952, will have you wanting to jump on a motorbike and travel across South America.
2. The Blues Brothers (1980)
The Chicago-based original is still the best. This influential comedy musical made Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi huge stars as the brothers trying to save an orphanage from closure by getting their R&B Blues band back together.
3. Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987)
This comedy starring Steve Martin and John Candy sees two very different characters desperately trying to get home for Thanksgiving after their flight is grounded. We’re sure your trip won’t be as eventful as this one.
4. Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
This tragicomedy is a heartwarming tale of a family driving their youngest daughter to a child beauty pageant in a campervan. You get a real feel for the American landscape, with filming taking place in Arizona and Southern California.
5. Rain Man (1988)
Dustin Hoffman won an Oscar for his portrayal of a man with autism, but Tom Cruise was a revelation in his role as his brother. Their road trip in a 1949 Buick Roadmaster convertible is a journey of self-discovery for both men and resulted in the film being the highest-grossing film of 1988.
6. The Muppet Movie (1979)
This family favourite is a laugh-a-minute as Kermit the Frog embarks on a cross-country trip to Los Angeles as he bids to break into show business. You’ll be singing the songs from the show on your journey.
7. National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983)
This box-office smash featuring the Griswald family’s cross-country trip to an amusement park spawned many sequels, including European Vacation and Christmas Vacation. Chevy Chase stars as the father just trying to get his family from Chicago to Walley World in California.
8. Smokey and the Bandit (1977)
Burt Reynolds was a huge movie star when this comedy caper was released and his easy charm makes you root for the bootleggers trying to transport beer across the country. The second star was the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am driven by the Bandit.
9. Thelma & Louise (1991)
We won’t spoil one of the most famous endings in film history, but this female-led road trip is a total classic. Starring Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis, and a cameo from a then-unknown Brad Pitt, the 1966 Ford Thunderbird they drive is also worth star billing.
10. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011) - Hindi
Three childhood best friends decide to reunite and go on a three-week-long bachelor road trip to Spain to rekindle their friendship and explore thrilling adventures, before one of them gets married. The 1949 Buick Super Convertible featured in this movie makes us want to take that road trip with our pals.
If you've enjoyed our road trip movie list then we think you'll also love our best songs for a road trip post.
